Dry skin is usually a long term problem that recurs often, especially in the winter. Dry skin results when there is not enough water in the stratum corneum(outmost layer of the skin) for it to function properly. One cause of this is when oils that are normally present in the skin are lost. They are lost due to exposure to harsh chemicals, the normal aging process and/or certain types of skin diseases where the amount of protective oils are decreased.
Proper Bathing Techniques
A foundation of management of dry skin is attention to proper bathing techniques and moderate use of effective moisturizers. Although long baths or showers, especially in hot water, are soothing they will also decrease the amount of the skin’s natural oils. Your bath or shower should be in warm water rather than hot and for (no more than 10 minutes). Be sure to use soaps that are milder, gentle and less drying. After bathing or showering, quickly and gently pat the skinpartially dry with a towel (do not rub!). Within three minutes of getting out the water apply a moisturizer to seal the water in the skin before it can evaporate.
